Walkability

Urban planners often design around the 5-minute, 10-minute, or 20-minute walk when considering access to services for a neighborhood. The average person will walk ¼ mile in 5 minutes; ½ mile in 10 minutes; and 1 mile in 20 minutes. These are generally considered the relative thresholds for the amount of time or distance people are willing to walk versus get in their car and drive.

Services include access to amenities such as public transit, schools, healthcare services and pharmacies, groceries or other shopping, eateries, places of worship, and access to recreation.

‘Walkability’ or ‘walkscore’ refers to the quantity, type, and quality of services available within those distances.
